TEXPERS Tribute to Alva Littlejohn

The Texas pension community lost Alva Littlejohn, 79, a leading figure of the continuing effort to create retirement security for men and women who dedicate themselves to public service.  Littlejohn passed on December 11 with his family by his side.  His obituary and memorial service details are posted below.

Littlejohn had dedicated himself to the service of his fellow firefighters in Lubbock, servi
ng on the Lubbock Fire Pension for 32 years, and with 29 years of service to Lubbock as a firefighter. He held positions of trustee, vice-chairman, chairman and civilian trustee. He attained TEXPERS’ designation of Certified Trustee, served as the TLFFRA Education Foundation chair, and chaired the TLFFRA Peer Review Committee, a committee which he started in 2007 with former Firefighters’ Pension Commissioner, Lisa Ivie Miller. He co-authored the TLFRRA New Trustee Manual and served on the Pension Review Board Committee that established Minimum Education Training (MET) for trustees of pension funds across Texas.

Littlejohn’s years of service and dedication was recognized by Kolby Beckham, the current TLFFRA Education Foundation chair, through a new TLFFRA Peer Review scholarship that recognizes trustees who seek to continuously improve their education and training in their local pension funds.

Littlejohn worked over many years in planning and developing the TLFFRA conference, paying attention to all the details for the annual TLFFRA conference across the state of Texas. Moreover, when the Texas Legislature sunset the Office of the Firefighters’ Pension Commissioner, Littlejohn worked with the former Commissioner and TEXPERS board members, to map out the direction for the future for TLFFRA Trustees’ support and continuing education. He led that plan with stakeholder and the Texas Pension Review Board, the Legislature and TEXPERS.
