Webinar Focuses on Convertible Securities

Webcast Allows Retirement Fund Trustees and Administrators Opportunity to Earn Continuing Education Credit

TEXPERS Staff Report

On March 17, the Texas Association of Public Employee Retirement Systems held its most recent online learning program, which focused on convertible securities.

TEXPERS Associate member Calamos Investments presented the webinar, New Year, New Risks: What to Know About Convertible Securities in 2021. Thought leaders with the firm educated attendees about the sometimes overlooked asset allocation tool.

Convertible securities offer fund portfolios the opportunity for upside equity participation, resilience against equity market downsides, and less vulnerability to interest rate increases than traditional bonds, says Ian Walker, director of Consultant Relations at Calamos. The global investment firm has spent decades offering investment strategies, including U.S. growth equity, global equity, multi-asset, alternatives, and convertibles. Walker and R. Scott Henderson, senior vice president and portfolio specialist with the firm, led the educational webcast.

The thought leaders explained what a convertible bond is and why companies issue convertible debt. Henderson offered an overview of the U.S. and global convertible markets, including issuance, performance, and credit quality. He reviewed convertible index composition to explain why active management matters and highlighted historical case studies navigating market corrections and compounding wealth with convertibles.

The webinar is part of a series of online educational programming TEXPERS created last year to help its system member trustees and administrators earn continuing education credit during the pandemic, which resulted in the cancelation of the Association's in-person events last year. TEXPERS is hosting another virtual event, Navigating Opportunities and Risks in Emerging Markets Debt, at 10 a.m. CST on Tuesday, March 32. Lazard Asset Management presents the program.
